Ranch C. Kimball, Secretary, Economic Development, State of Massachusetts

Ranch Kimball was appointed Secretary of Economic Development by Governor Mitt Romney in April 2004. Kimball advises the Governor on economic development efforts, including creating and retaining jobs, maintaining a stable tax structure for corporations and strengthening the state's competitiveness. He also oversees the Department of Business & Technology, the Department of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Kimball, 46, has spent his career working in business development and private equity. He most recently led the creation of a private equity unit at Kissinger McLarty Associates, a Washington D.C. consulting firm, headed by Dr. Henry Kissinger and former White House Chief of Staff Thomas "Mack" McLarty. Prior to that, Kimball was partner at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he worked extensively with technology, telecommunications, manufacturing, media and health care companies in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. During his 16 years at BCG, Kimball built, developed and led teams of hundreds of professionals in 26 offices in 13 countries around the world.

Kimball is also very involved in his community. He has worked with many boards and committees in support of a variety of public policy and children's issues, including Children's Television Workshop, public broadcasting and WGBH-TV. In his spare time, he enjoys eco-challenge adventure racing. Kimball earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University in 1980. He lives in Boston with his wife Alexa and their two-year-old son.

Sarah Rothermel concentrates her practice on organizing and advising private equity funds, LLCs, partnerships, joint ventures and closely-held businesses. She joined the firm in 1981.

Ms. Rothermel's clients include venture capital partnerships and other private equity funds, publicly and privately offered partnerships engaged in real estate investment and development, and other businesses that are structured as LLCs, limited partnerships or general partnerships. She advises clients on all aspects of LLC and partnership organization and operation, including corporate, securities and tax law issues. Ms. Rothermel represents venture capital funds both in connection with their organization and offering activities and their ongoing operations and investment matters.

Ms. Rothermel's clients include AEW Capital Management, L.P., CMGI @ Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson New England Fund, Greylock, Matrix Partners, Spaulding and Slye, and Village Ventures. A member of the American, Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations, Ms. Rothermel frequently addresses attorneys and business professionals on business and legal aspects of LLCs, partnership and joint venture organization and operation. Ms. Rothermel received a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Boston University School of Law, where she was a member and the executive editor of the Boston University Law Review. She is a graduate of Wellesley College. Ms. Rothermel is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Dan Primack is Editor-At-Large for Thomson Venture Economics, publisher of Venture Capital Journal, Private Equity Week and Buyouts. He also is the creator and editorial voice of the PE Week Wire, which is read by over 17,000 industry professionals each morning. Prior to joining Thomson Venture Economics in 2000, Primack covered the private debt beat for Private Placement Letter and served as Editor and Cofounder of The 'Bury, a Roxbury, Mass.-based newspaper catering to teenagers and young adults.
